Qualcomm Unveils World’s first 3D Ultrasonic in-display Fingerprint Sensor

Qualcomm has announced its flagship chipset which will be powering the top smartphones of 2019. At the ongoing Qualcomm’s annual Snapdragon Tech Summit at Maui, Hawaii the company has announced its Snapdragon 855 chipset which will be the successor of the Snapdragon 845 chipset. On day one of the summits, Qualcomm also announced its partnership with Katouzian to develop the first 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for smartphones.

Implementing this technology on the smartphone could be a bit more costly and it will all depend on the smartphone manufactures to use it on their devices or not. The new sensor has the ability to read fingerprint with various conditions like wet fingers or an oily finger. As we know, most of the in-display fingerprint sensors in the current market use optical sensors as they throw up light on to the screen to read the fingerprints. When this happens with water in between or any other liquids or oils, there is a tendency of light to diffract through these substances and might not function accurately.

Now with the new 3D technology, the handset will read fingerprints via sound waves which will be mapping the peaks and valleys on a fingerprint. Isn’t that interesting? The optical sensor would require a specific part of the screen to be touched to read the users finger but with 3D optical technology, the user be able to place the finger on a wider area of the display to get authenticated.

This technology can be embedded on to the smartphones in a discreet manner which will be saving the thickness as well as space on the handset. To authenticate the users, this technology will be mapping peaks and valleys through sound waves. We will be knowing more details about this 3D Ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor in the coming days and would be interesting see which smartphone maker will implement this first.
