OnePlus Again Caught Collecting Data, Sending Info to Singapore Servers

You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.

If you have followed the OnePlus AMA’s on Reddit, you might have noticed that the company has never been transparent against the allegations. Except for the lack of NFC on OnePlus 2 and “Jelly Scrolling Effect” on OnePlus 5, there isn’t much to complain about the hardware aspect of the OnePlus smartphones. However, its in-house OxygenOS has seen some allegations from time to time. Just last month, UK-based software engineer Chris Moore has shown how OnePlus is collecting users information without their permission.

Today, we came to know about an app called “OPBugReportLite” in OxygenOS, which sends data like battery stats, kernel panics, watchdogs, ANRs and all crashes of your device to the servers in Singapore. While the Twitter user Elliot Alderson‏ has mentioned it to happen every six hours, my OnePlus 3 (Join user experience programme is enabled on my device) is sending the data with an interval of 4-8 hours. As of now, there is no information how other manufacturers does the data collection.

In case of OxygenOS, OnePlus can even remotely configuration settings. While collecting data from the device isn’t any new for the manufacturers, we hope they make it more transparent or at least anonymous. If you are a OnePlus user, the app named as BugReportLite can be found on your OnePlus device. Go the Apps section in the system settings and enable Show system apps, you can find the BugReportLite app.

However, the OnePlus devices running on custom ROM’s will have no effect of the data collection. If you have a rooted OnePlus device running OxygenOS, then you can enter the code “pm uninstall -k –user 0 com.oneplus.opbugreportlite” in ADB to remove app. The users can also disable the app to stop the uploading the process, but the log files will be still saved on the device.
