Google Starts Rolling Out December Android Security Update for Pixel & Nexus Smartphones
Google starts rolling out a new OTA (over-the-air) update for its Pixel and Nexus devices. The update brings Android Security patch for the month of December 2018 which also includes many functional improvements for the devices that are eligible. The update will be bringing improvements in many other areas that are listed below and furthermore, the first generation Pixel along with the Pixel XL have not received the update yet.
- Improvements in memory performance under certain circumstances (Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements in the camera capture performance (Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements in the notification visibility while using Pixel stand (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements in the Android Auto compatibility (Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Adjustments for autofocus behavior (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements in the hotword performance while using Pixel Stand (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements in the Always On Display triggering (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Adjustments made in volume behavior when toggling Bluetooth (Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improved USB-C audio accessory detection (Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements in audio performance for Android Auto in few vehicles (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements contouring on HDR on few applications (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements for camera shutter performances (Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
- Improvements for unlocking performance while using Bluetooth (Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL)
The supported devices from Google will be receiving an update to the 2018-12-05 patch which has to be accepted and installed by the users. The Google device firmware images are also available on the Developer site and it is clearly mentioned on the site, that it is easier and safer to sideload the full OTA image and if you still wish to use a factory image, make sure you are relying on the bootloader when the process is completed. It is suggested to backup all the data since apps and their related data will be uninstalled while installing the factory image.
