Apple’s wireless charging pad AirPower is dead, confirms the company: Report
Apple’s much anticipated or now we can say most delayed wireless charging pad – the AirPower might never see the light of the day. Yes, the AirPower has now been officially canceled by Apple, citing the inability to meet its high standards for hardware. Apple had confirmed this in an email statement to TechCrunch today.
The statement from the Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Dan Riccio had stated that after much efforts the company had concluded that AirPower could not achieve their high standards, which eventually led to canceling the project. The statement from Apple’s SVP also included an apology to their consumers who were much anticipated of its launch for over past 18 months. The statement concluded with the company believing in the future to be wireless and assuring to push the wireless experience forward in the future. The cancellation from Apple comes surprisingly because the recently launched AirPods 2nd-gen featured a wireless charging case, which stated it supports AirPower on the packaging of the case.
For those who are unaware, Apple had announced its AirPower charging pad back in 2017 alongside the launch of tenth-anniversary iPhone X and the true wireless AirPods 1st-gen (2nd-gen have been launched recently). During the announcement, Apple had stated that AirPower would be available in 2018, which indeed didn’t happen and explained the luxury of charging all its wireless charging supported Apple products on a single wireless charging pad. This was one of the much-awaited products since it could charge the devices iPhone 8 and above and could charge the Apple Watch and the newly announced AirPods wireless charging case all at once.
The report further explains the possibilities of why Apple had eventually decided to cancel the AirPower Project. It suggests the project had faced engineering problems related to the laws of physics and AirPower during its testing had run too hot due to its proximity of the 3D charging coils, which are required to charge multiple devices very closely on the wireless pad, which apparently needed more cautious power management. However, Apple hadn’t shed any precise details about the reason for canceling the much-awaited AirPower, and the report cites the earlier mentioned power management issues might be one of the reasons for its cancellation.
