Meitu Releases Whitepaper for its Blockchain-based Decentralized Facial Recognition Technology
You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.
The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meitu is also known for making the camera related apps including BeautyCam, SelfieCity, and MakeupPlus. Almost a year ago, the company launched the Meitu T8 smartphone featuring a 12MP sensor on the front with AI-based Face Beauty, OIS, and dual pixel autofocus. Earlier this week, Meitu came up with a whitepaper for its own blockchain solution. According to the information from the whitepaper, the company is planning to create a secure and decentralized facial recognition technology called Meitu Intelligent Passport (MIP).
The MIP based on the new blockchain technology can be even used on other apps and platforms. With the Meitu Intelligent Passport, the user can use the facial recognition algorithms as a password to complete the decentralized know your customer (KYC) process on the blockchain. The blockchain also helps the company to collect all the different data of the user to create the Meitu Smart Profile. The services or apps based on the Meitu’s blockchain technology can offer their users the exact information they are looking for in a more secure way.
While the company already implemented the AI-based face beauty technology on its smartphones, the blockchain will be using the AI-based facial recognition technology for authentication. Meitu is also mentioned to offer the MIP authentication for more sensitive offerings like medical treatment and education services. Unlike the high-level authentication services offered by several other companies around the world, the Meitu’s MIP information will be anonymous and stored on a decentralized network.
While the Meitu Intelligent Passport and Meitu Smart Profile look promising, let’s wait and see how long the information can be anonymous from Chinese surveillance system. Without the Chinese government approval, the company might not get wider reach in its home country. However, the company also confirmed that there will be no ICO or any other form of fundraising actives on its blockchain technology. The company is yet to reveal the timeline for offering these services. Stay tuned on PhoneRadar for more details!
