The Consumer Electronic Show (CES 2017) has kickstarted in Las Vegas, and we already have a bunch of announcement. However, the most interesting one which probably many of us were looking forward was the announcement of the latest and the greatest Snapdragon 835 SoC by Qualcomm. Now that Qualcomm has made the 10nm Snapdragon 835 SoC with Kryo 280 8-Core CPU & Quick Charge 4 official, we can now expect a lot of new devices to come equipped with this new SoC. We already have a ton of new flagship smartphones lined-up for this. However, the ODG R-8 and the R-9 smartglasses are the first devices to come powered by the new Snapdragon 835 SoC.
Osterhout Design Group, also known as ODG is best known for its wide virtual reality and augmented reality smart glasses. And now just after the announcement of the latest SoC from Qualcomm, ODG has announced their new smart glasses called the R-8 and R-9. Apart from the fact that these smart glasses are powered by the Qualcomm’s 835 SoC, they also use Qualcomm’s VR SDK, and this has allowed them to attract over 300,000 developers for the platform. Now talking about the glasses themselves, the R-9 is more of a commercially oriented product whereas the R-8 is targeted towards the consumers.
The R-9 smart glasses has a field of view of 50-degrees with a 1080p resolution. It also has a 13MP front-facing camera that is capable of shooting 4K video at 60FPS or 1080p video at 120FPS. It has two speakers as well and has an onboard storage of 128GB. The R-9 smart glasses units will start shipping by the second quarter of 2017 and are priced at $1,800 and above. The R-8 on the other hand as mentioned earlier is targetted towards the consumers. It also has the same internals and is powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC, but the display is toned down to 720p resolution. The FOV is 40-degrees now as compared to the 50-degrees on the R-9. The R-8 also comes with a 64GB of internal storage.
The R-8 also has a front-facing camera just like the R-9, however, the camera on the R-8 is only capable of shooting at 1080p unlike the 4K one with the R-9. The R-8 smart glasses will be available to developers by the second half of 2017 and will be priced well under $1000 which is comparatively less than the $1,800 for the R-9. Well, talking about smartphones powered by the latest Snapdragon 835 SoC, we may be getting the Samsung Galaxy S8 by next month which is also expected to come powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC. While not much info is available on the same, as of now these two smart glasses are the only devices we have right now that are powered by the latest Snapdragon 835 SoC. If you want to know more on th devices that are powered by the latest SoC from Qualcomm, then be sure to stay tuned to PhoneRadar for more details.
