3D Print your Next Smartphone with the DIY KitePhone Project
Earlier today, we have covered about the magnetic battery pods that can charge your smartphone on the go. The idea turned in to an actual product with the Kickstarter listing. Now, we got another exciting crowdfunding project from Kickstarter. The Hyderabad-based iSquare Mobility has developed a module called for Kiteboard for building a modular Android smartphone. In the past, we have seen modular smartphone ideas from companies like Google, LG, and Phonebloks which never took-off the ground.
Motorola has been launching semi-modular smartphones under the Moto Z series. Apart from the initial buzz, the Moto Z smartphones failed to grab attention from the smartphone buyers. The company is calling the smartphone built using the Kiteboard as KitePhone. More than the regular smartphone users, the KitePhone will be an interesting device for the students, hackers, and researchers to try and develop innovative technologies.
The first working prototype is called as Poorna, and it comes equipped with older Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor. However, the backers will be getting the second-gen Kiteboard called as Kite v2. The KiteBoard v2 packs the last year’s Snapdragon 450 octa-core processor. With the Kite v2, the user can have a new 5-inch smartphone built in just five minutes. It also sports a 12MP rear camera and the old-fashioned 3.5mm audio jack.
The company will also provide the information to 3D print the parts required to put everything into one piece. The Raspberry Pi HAT compatibility also opens the door for the KiteBoard v2 to use for wide-range DIY projects. It packs 3,000mAh battery and includes all the standard mobile competes. The KiteBoard v2 also supports up to two displays and two cameras in case of advanced usage. As of now, there is no other information available about the KiteBoard v2, not even the renders.
While the Kiteboard seems to bring unlimited possibilities, first it has to reach the huge $941,000 goal on Kickstarter. The users can pledge as low as $274 to get the Kiteboard v2 along with 24-hour video tutorial. As of now, the earliest shipping date mentioned is January 2019. The project went live on April 23rd and currently (April 26th) got 40 backers. Stay tuned on Phone Radar to know whether the Kiteboard project achieved its goal or not.
