Qualcomm Announces 10nm Snapdragon 835 SoC with Kryo 280 8-Core CPU & Quick Charge 4
You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.
The Snapdragon 835 SoC is the latest and most advanced mobile SoC from Qualcomm. It was first teased in the joint press conference between Qualcomm and Samsung in November last year. This new Snapdragon 835 SoC is built on Samsung’s 10nm FinFET process. At that time, the company also announced this processor to support Quick Charge 4 fast charging technology that can give 5 hours of battery life with just 5 minutes of charging. However, today the company made the official announcement regarding this new processor with complete specifications. The 10nm architecture resulted in making the Snapdragon 835 SoC 35% smaller than its predecessor, Snapdragon 820/821 SoC.
This new SoC packs the new in-house Kryo 280 CPU that includes four performance cores clocked at 2.45GHz and four efficiency cores clocked at 1.95GHz. It also comes paired with Hexagon 682 DSP and Adreno 540 GPU which are faster and better than their predecessors Hexagon 680 DSP and Adreno 530 GPU that can be found on the Snapdragon 820/821 SoC. Along with that, it also supports OpenGL ES 3.2, full OpenCL 2.0, Vulkan and DX12. Talking about the cameras, the Snapdragon 835 can support upto 32MP camera or two 16MP cameras. The Qualcomm Spectra 180 ISP (Image Signal Processor) and Hexagon 682 DSP brings better camera features to this new processor.
It has a 14-bit hybrid auto-focus and supports laser, contrast, structured light, and dual-phase detection autofocus. The devices using this processor can capture 4K videos at 30 fps and is capable of 4K video playback at up to 60 fps. The Snapdragon X16 LTE modem integrated with this new processor supports Cat.16 LTE which can give speeds upto 1Gbps. With the Cat.13 LTE, the upload speeds can reach up to 150 Mbps. The 802.11ad multi-gigabit Wi-Fi with the integrated 2×2 11ac MU-MIMO results in 60% less power usage for Wi-Fi and also offer speeds up to 4.6 Gbps. The Snapdragon 835 also supports the recently announced Bluetooth 5 which is more power efficient and offers better connectivity.
The advanced 256-QAM digital signal processing of the modem can processes data on four antennas through 4×4 MIMO and supports up to 4X carrier aggregation (4CA). Talking about the Quick Charge 4, it is 20% faster and 30% more efficient than the last year’s Quick Charge 3.0. With the drastic decrease in the size of this new chipset, makes more room for other parts in the devices like smartphones, VR headsets, and tablets. Coming to the sound output, the Snapdragon 835 is said to support 3D positional audio, superior SNR (Signal-to-Noise ratio), and native DSD format support for generating true-to-life sounds. It also offers true high fidelity playback thanks to the latest Qualcomm Aqstic audio technology.
It also supports Goole’s VR platform, Daydream for offering high quality mobile VR experience. The ODG’s R-8 and R-9 smartglasses are the first Snapdragon 835 powered devices to be announced. However, there is no announcement from any smartphone manufacturer about the Snapdragon 835 SoC powered smartphone. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more details about the upcoming announcements at the ongoing CES 2017.
