Oculus Partnered with Xiaomi to Launch the Oculus Go and China-exclusive Mi VR Standalone

You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.

Oculus, the VR company, owned by Facebook has partnered with the China-based Xiaomi for the global launch of Oculus Go standalone VR headset. The Oculus Go was first announced in October last year and might cost $199 when it goes on sale in the next couple of months. There is another VR headset called Mi VR Standalone exclusively for the Chinese market. It is based on Oculus VR technology, but the VR content comes from Xiaomi.

We all know Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are completely banned in China. Even the Oculus as a Facebook-owned company might face issues in selling the Oculus Go in China. As per the hardware is concerned, both the Oculus Go and Mi VR Standalone looks exactly similar. They both come powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 Mobile VR Platform. The Mi VR Standalone is also mentioned to support Oculus Mobile SDK.

It will enable the Oculus developers to easily share the content from Oculus VR platform to the Mi VR platform. Hugo Barra, who is currently the “VP of VR” at Facebook had earlier served as Global VP at Xiaomi for four years. However, there is no information about the exact availability date or the pricing of both these standalone VR headsets. Last year, Xiaomi launched the Mi VR Play 2 headset which looks similar to the Google Daydream View headset.

There is also a high-end headset from Xiaomi called Mi VR Glasses. It packs a motion sensor within the headset, and the device can be connected using the USB Type-C port. It works on the Chinese Mi VR platform and comes bundled with a 9-axis controller. As of now, the Xiaomi Mi VR Glasses is only limited to the Chinese market. With the partnership between Oculus and Xiaomi, we might not even see the Mi VR platform outside of China.
