iFixit teardown suggests that the Galaxy S8 & S8+ are not easy to repair

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ were announced a couple of weeks back and the devices are due for a launch on April 21st in U.S and other markets. The company is also launching the smartphones today in India and the pre-orders will be open starting today. While we have to wait for the full review to know good these devices actually are, there are a lot of other things to look out for until then. iFixit, the company which is known for taking devices apart and helping us fix them, did a Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus teardown and they have a lot to talk about the devices repairability.

To begin with, iFixit suggests that both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ are pretty much the same from the inside, although there is a significantly bigger battery. This is definitely surprising since we expected minor changes given the size of the Plus variant. The glass-on-glass construction of the device makes it hard to open up in the first place, let alone the other internal components to play around with. iFixit also notes that the battery inside the device is also not easy to take out.

Coming to replacing the front display, it looks like it is nearly impossible to replace the front glass without damaging the curved display. Now, this could be an issue to a lot of people since replacing the front glass would be something that most people would be interested in doing. Given the fact that it all glass construction, the chances of breaking it are more and hence replacement is also likely to be more. However, one of the things which iFixit states is that most of the components used inside are modular and can be replaced independently.

Overall to sum this up, iFixt has given the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are getting repairability scores of just 4 out of 10. Now if you ask if this is a deal breaker, then no. This is obviously not going to bother most of the people. Also, the last years’ Galaxy Note 7, as well as the Galaxy S7 Edge, also received similar scores and most users seem to be doing fine with the Galaxy S7 Edge. Long story short, if you are having some issues with your Galaxy S8 or the Galaxy S8 Plus, then you should probably consider getting it replaced while you can or maybe give it to a service center and avoid repairing it at home.
