Vivo Betters Apple’s Face ID with TOF 3D Sensing Technology
Till last year, Vivo and OPPO are known for overcharging the customers by selling less powerful smartphones with a huge marketing push. While the companies marketing has never gone down, their smartphones now seem to come with aggressive price tag than earlier. Vivo has been making headlines continuously by announcing innovative devices. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is the world’s first smartphone to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor.
At the MWC 2018, the company showcased the Vivo APEX concept smartphone with a true bezel-less display. A couple of weeks ago, the company even launched the retail version of the Vivo APEX called as Vivo NEX. At the ongoing MWC Shanghai 2018, the company for the first time showcased the Time of Flight (TOF) 3D Sensing Technology. It is mentioned to capture 300,000 sensor points, which is 10x more than the sensor points captures using Apple’s Face ID technology.
According to the company, this new TOF 3D Sensing Technology will help in improving the facial, gesture, and motion recognition along with 3D photography and Augmented Reality (AR). This new technology will use the time taken to reach the emitted pulse light back to the sensor to accurately map objects. Vivo says the TOF 3D Sensing Technology can accurately measure the source from as far as three meters.
The company also specially mentioned that it’s not just a mere proof of concept. So, we can expect the TOF 3D Sensing Technology on Vivo smartphones in the near future. Vivo also shared some use cases of this new technology like merging with AR capabilities can allow users to try on clothes virtually or play mixed reality (MR) games using track gestures. Even the data collected using this technology can be used for 3D printing.
It interesting to see a lot of innovation in the smartphone space. Also, the technology is evolving so fast that the smartphone manufacturers can’t sit working on just one new feature.
