Facebook Launches Parent-controlled “Messenger Kids” App for iOS Users in the U.S

Facebook released a new version of its Messenger app called as Messenger Kids. It is currently available in the U.S for iOS App Store for iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone. We can expect the Android version to be available soon on Play Store and Amazon App Store in the coming weeks. According to the company, the app is developed with the inputs taken from kids, parents and parenting experts in the country.

The Messenger Kids allow the kids to sent messages or make video calls with the contacts approved by their parents. There are options for one-on-one or group chats, and the kids can also have fun by using GIFs, frames, masks, emojis, and sound effects offered within the app. The home screen shows the pre-approved contacts and their online status.

Unlike the regular Messenger app, there will be no Facebook account created for the Messenger Kids account. There will be an option called Messenger Kids in the parent’s Facebook app, where they can add or remove the contacts in the Messenger Kids app. Facebook also mentioned that there will be no ads shows in the Messenger Kids app, and the child’s information will not be used for ads.

The Messenger Kids app can be created by the parents with their Facebook logins. Once the account is created, it works as a standalone app, but the parents can control the settings with their Facebook app. The company also says the app is designed to be compliant with the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (COPPA). There are also no in-app purchases within the app, which is also a big relief for the parents. As of now, there is no information about the availability of this app in other markets.
