Google Brings Augmented Reality Stickers App to Pixel & Pixel 2 Devices

After working on the Augmented Reality (AR) for a few years under the Tango project, Google developed the ARcore with the inputs from its previous AR experience. Unlike the Tango devices, the ARcore powered devices don’t require any special hardware. Now, the company has launched the AR stickers app for the Pixel devices. With the Augmented Reality stickers, the user can add the available characters from the app into their photos and videos.

While the Google Pixel and Pixel 2 devices support AR stickers, only the Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL are factory calibrated for AR and hence will offer a better experience. Also, these supported devices should be running on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo to use the AR stickers. The option to add AR stickers can be found in the nav menu on the left in the Pixel’s camera app. As of now, we can find only the stickers from Star Wars, Stranger Things, and few others.

When you add two AR stickers, they both can even interact with each other. However, the autofocus will be disabled when using accessing Augmented Reality stickers which means the AR stickers. While the camera controls are placed at the bottom, the controls for AR stickers can be found above the viewfinder. Earlier to Google, Sony offered similar AR experience with its 3D creator option. The user can scan the avatar of the person in 3D and make the custom stickers out of it.

Google with its ARcore is competing with Apple’s ARkit in the Augmented Reality space. While the ARcore isn’t available on wide-range of devices, we expect it to made available for flagship devices in 2018.
