JioPhone Becomes First Feature Phone to Support Google Assistant

Today, Google has launched the Android Oreo Go Edition at the Google for India event held in New Delhi, India. At the same event, the company also announced the Google Assistant support for feature phones which have internet connectivity. The first feature phone to get the Google Assistant is the Reliance Jio’s JioPhone. Interestingly, JioPhone already has its own voice assistant called HelloJio.

Just like HelloJio, the Google Assistant on JioPhone also supports the Hindi language. However, there is no information about the support for other major Indian regional languages. Apart from Apple’s Siri, all the other major voice assistants are cross-platform supported. The JioPhone runs on Firefox OS-based KaiOS and lacks the vast apps ecosystem like Android or Apple. Even the JioPhone lacks the basic apps like WhatsApp or e-Wallets.

There are also rumors that the might soon unveil the Android-powered JioPhone. We expect the upcoming device from Reliance Jio to run on the Android Oreo Go Edition. The JioPhone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 chipset and offers Wi-Fi and 4G VoLTE connectivity options. It lacks the dual-SIM support and the device is locked to the Jio 4G network. The JioPhone is priced at Rs. 1,500 and comes with a special Rs 169 unlimited plan.

It sports a 2.4-inch display and includes 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The user can further expandable the storage up to 128GB via a MicroSD card. It even supports mobile payment with the built-in NFC chip and the users is forced to use only JioMoney. It even got a rear camera, torchlight, and FM radio. The phone supports 22 Indian languages and can mirror the content using the JioMedia cable.
