Gorilla Glass SR+ unveiled by Corning for upcoming SmartWatches & other Wearable Devices
Corning unveiled the new Gorilla Glass SR+, which is a new cover glass for your smartwatches and wearables. If you may or may not remember, Corning announced the ‘Project Phire’, back in 2015. It was done in an effort to create a material for wearables. This combines the durability of Gorilla Glass with the scratch-resistance level of Sapphire. And now after a year of development, finally the company unveiled the new Gorilla Glass SR+.
According to the company, the new Gorilla Glass SR+ is an entirely new glass composition. The company stated that it combines the toughness, optical clarity, and touch sensitivity of Gorilla Glass with the superior scratch resistance of luxury watch covering material. The new Gorilla Glass SR+ deliver up to 70 percent better damage resistance than alternative display cover materials. The company also claims that it will offer improved optical performance and improved readability in situations like direct sunlight. This new glass has 25 percent better surface reflection.
Also, this product is now available worldwide for manufacturers to use. However, at this point, it remains unclear as to which manufacturers will use this new glass on their devices. It is expected that the devices using the Saphire glass currently will be moving to this one as it combines the goodness of both the worlds. And if that happens, then we might see the upcoming Apple Watch also use this new glass. However, this is just a speculation and we don’t have any confirmation on any of this. Corning also unveiled the new Gorilla Glass 5 for smartphones. Until now most of the smartphones were using the Gorilla Glass 4, but now that the new glass version is out, we will see all of them making a jump. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phablet is the first device to use the Gorilla Glass 5. Stay tuned to Phone Radar for detailed info on this in future.
