MediaTek Helio P15 SoC Clocked at 2.2GHz is Now Official, Supports Cat.6 LTE
In 2015, we saw a growth in manufacturers opting for the MediaTek processors for their entry-level and mid-range smartphones. MediaTek has recently announced a few new chipsets – Helio X30, Helio P20, and Helio P25. The earlier announced Helio X20 SoC which is said to compete with the Snapdragon 820 SoC is also used in the smartphones priced at $150. Though most of the manufacturers are using the Snapdragon processors for the flagship devices, the use of MediaTek processors can be found in the budget smartphones. The Helio P10 is one of the best MediaTek SoC’s launched in 2015; it is also used in the popular OPPO R9 that was launched in India as OPPO F1 Plus.
Now all of a sudden, the company introduced the Helio P15 SoC as the successor to Helio P10. The Helio P15 comes with Cortex A53 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz and coupled with dual-core Mali T860 GPU clocked at 800MHz. The Helio P10 also came with Cortex A53 octa-core processor but is only clocked at 2.0GHz. It will be built on the same TSMC 28nm process that is used for Helio P10. According to the company, this new chipset will offer 10% better performance than its predecessor. There is no much information available about this chipset and but it is mentioned to support Cat.6 LTE. The availability of the Helio P15 processor is still unknown, but we expect it to soon available in the market.
Unlike the Helio P10, the Helio P15 can be used even in much cheaper smartphones as there are also Helio P20 and Helio P25 processors catering the mid-range devices. Both the Helio P20 and Helio P25 processor are built on TSMC 16nm FinFET architecture. Compared to Helio P10, the CPU and GPU on the Helio P20 and P25 processors are said to come with 20% enhanced performance and consume 25% lesser power. The new processor also supports LPDDR4 RAM for providing lag-free experience. Just like the Helio P10 and P15, the P20 also sports eight Cortex A53 processors but are clocked at 2.3GHz. The Helio P20 uses the Mali T880 GPU which comes clocked at 900MHz.
