Earlier: Just yesterday, BlackBerry launched its latest TCL built smartphone, BlackBerry KEYone. Now, we are seeing the second smartphone launch at MWC 2017 from the South Korean company, LG Electronics. LG has officially launched the flagship LG G6 smartphone that includes a few interesting changes from its predecessor. Mainly, the LG G6 lacks the removable battery, and it now needs to offer superior battery life to take a dig at other smartphone brands. However, removing the removable battery feature, the company is now able to offer IP68 certification to make the LG G6 both water and dust resistant.
The device comes with a metal frame and glass back body. It will be available in three different color variants – Ice Platinum / Mystic White / Astro Black. Unlike the last year’s LG 5, the LG G6 lacks the modularity and also misses its Friends. The rear of the LG G6 looks clean with antenna bands limited to the edges. While the volume rocker is placed on the left edge of the device, the power button can be found on the left edge. On the front is a 5.7-inch FullVision display that occupies 90% of the real estate on the front. It comes with QuadHD+ (2880 x 1440 pixels) OLED panel and has unusual 18:9 aspect ratio.
According to the company, the LG G6 is most compact smartphone featuring a 5.7-inch display. It also supports DolbyVision and HDR 10 display technologies for better viewing experience. Not only the device comes with rounded edges, even the display also features rounded edges. Even though Qualcomm already announced the latest Snapdragon 835 SoC which will be first seen with the Galaxy S8 launching next month, LG still opted for the Snapdragon 821 SoC instead of delaying the launch. It is an upgraded version of the Snapdragon 820 SoC and comes with the same Adreno 530 GPU. It packs 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32GB UFS 2.0 internal storage.
There is also a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion upto 2TB. In the camera department, there is a dual camera setup on the rear with a 13MP standard sensor with f/1.8 aperture and OIS 2.0, and another 13MP wide-angle sensor offering f/2.4 aperture and 125-degree wide-angle lens. For selfies, there is a 5MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture and 100-degree wide angle lens. The battery capacity is bumped from 2,800mAh on the LG G5 to 3,300mAh on the new LG G6. It supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology and also wireless charging. It measures 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm and weighs 163 grams.
The display on the front comes with Gorilla Glass 3 protection, whereas the rear camera lens and glass back body are protected by Gorilla Glass 4 and Gorilla Glass 5 respectively. The device runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat with the LG UX 6.0 UI laid on top. It is also the first third-party Android smartphone with built-in Google Assistant. The 32-bit Quad DAC will give Hi-Fi audio output both from the headphones and the loudspeaker. The fingerprint sensor is integrated into the power button on the rear.
Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, NFC, 3.5mm Audio port, and USB Type-C 2.0. It will be available for pre-order on March 2 and will go on sale starting March 10. The company is yet to announce the official pricing of the LG G6.
