The Japanese smartphone maker, Sharp launched its latest smartphone in the Aquos series called Sharp Aquos R in Japan. Last week, the company also launched the high-end Sharp Z3 in Taiwan for NT$ 13,990 (approx US$ 460 / Rs. 30,000). It came with an unibody metal design featuring 5.3-inch Quad HD display & 16MP OIS camera. Now, the new Sharp Aquos R comes with glass back body and an Aluminum frame around it. Just like the Sharp Z3, the Aquos R also runs on Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box. It comes in Mercury Black and Zirconia White color options.
The device sports a 5.3-inch Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) IGZO display and is mentioned to be compatible with HDR 10. Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC featuring custom built Kryo cores and includes Adreno 540 GPU to look after the graphics part. It is built by Samsung using the 10nm FinFET process, and its smaller size gives the manufacturer a little more space to play with. There is 4GB of RAM and 64GB which should be sufficient for an Android 7.1 Nougat powered device. There is also a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion up to another 256GB.
Much like the many other devices in Japan, the Aquos R also comes with IP68 certification making both water and dust resistant. The physical home button on the front also comes included with a fingerprint sensor for making the device more secure. There is a 22.6MP rear camera with f1.9 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), 90-degree wide-angle lens, and dual-tone LED flash. On the front is a 16.3MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and the same 90-degree wide-angle lens as seen on the primary camera.
Sharp also promised to release the Android OS updates for the first two years. It is backed by a 3,160mAh non-removable battery and comes with QuickCharge 3.0 instead of the latest QuickCharge 4.0. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC/Felica, S, USB Type-C port. The power button and volume rocker are placed on the right edge of the device. Just like Samsung’s Bixby and HTC’s Sense Companion, Sharp is also offering it’s own AI assistant called EMOPA with the Aquos R. There is also a charging dock station called “Roboqul” which is expected to show the important notifications by detecting the users face.
