Qualcomm Announces 14nm-based Snapdragon 636 Mobile Platform & Snapdragon X50 5G modem

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest mid-range chipset Snapdragon 636 at the 2017 4G/5G Summit. It is an upgraded variant of the Snapdragon 630 which was launched alongside the Snapdragon 660 in May 2017 this year. This new mobile platform according to Qualcomm is built using 14nm FinFet process. While the Snapdragon 630 came with Cortex A53 cores, the new Snapdragon 636 uses the custom Kryo 260 cores. The company also mentioned this processor to support the ultra-wide Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) and Assertive Displays.

It also sports the Adreno 509 GPU which is said to give 10% higher performance compared to the last-gen GPU. The Adreno Visual Processing Subsystem on this processor comes integrated with Qualcomm TruPalette and Qualcomm EcoPix. For the cellular connectivity, it comes equipped with Snapdragon X12 LTE modem that offers download speeds up to 600 Mbps. There is also a 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra 160 ISP and supports up to 24MP sensors with zero shutter lag, smooth zoom, and fast autofocus.

Commenting on the announcement, Kedar Kondap, VP, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, said,

“The introduction of the Snapdragon 636 Mobile Platform allows OEMs to enjoy a smooth transition from the Snapdragon 660 and 630 Mobile Platforms while supporting the deployment of superior functionality and performance to end users. Manufacturers can use the same modem and camera architecture to enable fast and efficient testing and calibration, cutting down on significant resources or time normally required when developing products on brand new platforms.”

It also offers the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technology. The processor also supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and offers up to 4K Ultra HD video playback. For Hi-Fi audio output, it supports Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec with up to 192kHz/24bit. The Snapdragon 636 Mobile Platform is expected to start shipping from next month. The company mentioned that it had achieved a 5G data connection using its Snapdragon X50 5G modem for mobile devices.It

It delivers up to 1Gbps download speeds with the data connection of 28GHz mmWave radio frequency band combined with advanced signal processing technologies. While the company took 12 months to demo the 5G technology, the commercial availability is expected to begin early 2019. For the 5G network, the carriers have to acquire more spectrum bands and should compulsorily need to switch to Voice over LTE  (VoLTE). In India, Reliance has already announced to be 5G ready and Airtel is switching to VoLTE.
