Air India to offer onboard WiFi Internet on flights powered by BSNL

Bored on the flights without the internet access? Well, then this is for you. Air India, which is owned by Air India Limited, an enterprise of Government of India is now planning to offer Wi-Fi on board. Air India has approached BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam, Ltd) and asked them to work out the feasibility to get an estimate on how much would it cost to install Wi-Fi on its aircraft. Reportedly Air India is also talking to another international onboard internet providers to improve their service on board.

We are keen to have the internet on board as AI operates the longest flights out of India and this is a facility that is being increasingly provided by several leading global airlines. However, we are first seeing how much the project will cost, and if found feasible we will like to have the same on our aircraft,” said a senior official. AI chief Ashwani Lohani recently met his BSNL counterpart Anupam Srivastava to take this issue forward.

” Depending on the cost, we will see whether we can opt for it and if yes, for which flights – international and/or domestic; whether it can be free or what charges should be levied. By the time we take a call on these issues, India is also expected to relax the norms for internet on aircraft in its airspace,” said the official.

It will be interesting to see if the airlines will be charging its passengers extra for the Wi-Fi access or will it provide for free to everyone. Whatever the plan is, but access to the internet will also save lots of time, and many can work on their projects online without wasting time. With this move, there is a good chance to see an increase in the passengers and since it is an International airline Wi-Fi access will help.
