As announced earlier, Xiaomi launched its latest smartphone called Mi Max 2 today in China. The device has been in the rumors mills for quite a few months, and the key specifications are leaked out. It is the second device to launch under the Mi Max series. Last year, the company unveiled the Mi Max first in China and later made it available in other Asian markets as well. With the Mi Max 2, the company altered the design to give it a premium look. As seen on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the Antenna bands on the rear are placed across the top and rear edges. These curved Antenna bands give a clean look to the device.
As seen on the Mi Max, the new Mi Max 2 also comes with the same 6.44-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display. However, the company trimmed down the black bezels around the screen. Considering the large screen size, the company has included the
floating ball and one hand mode for more convenient one-hand usage. The 4GB RAM variant of the Mi Max 2 sports the 64-bit Snapdragon 626 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz and comes coupled with Adreno 506 GPU. This is the same processor that also powers the high-end Samsung Galaxy C7 Pro and Galaxy C5 Pro smartphones.
There is also a 6GB RAM variant that comes powered by the newly launched Snapdragon 660 SoC. It includes custom Kryo 260 cores and much better Adreno 512 GPU. It will be available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB storage variants. There is no MicroSD card slot for storage expansion. In the camera department, the Mi Max 2 features a 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor on the rear with PDAF and a large 1.25μm pixel size. This is the same sensor that is used for the rear camera on Xiaomi Mi 6. For selfies, there is a 5MP front camera with wide-angle lens.
The Mi Max2 runs on Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box with the latest MIUI skin on top. With the large display and latest Android OS, the user can use two apps at a time with the split screen multitasking feature. It is backed by a 5,300mAh battery that is rated to give up to 18 hours of video playback or up to 57 hours of talk time. The company also claims the device to last up to 2 days on a regular usage. FYI, the first-gen Mi Max came with a 4,850mAh non-removable battery. The Mi Max 2 also supports reverse charging and Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology. With such a large battery, the Mi Max can be charged from 0% to 68% in just one hour.
