Opera Browser Servers Hacked, Passwords possibly compromised – How to Reset
Security breaches have become more common these days. Earlier, these cases were not as common, and we hardly used to see any in a given year. But now the targets have increased and are getting very specific, to be honest. Last time, the hackers eyed Sony and now, this time, it is Opera. Yes, Opera Servers were breached last week. Opera Blog post also confirmed the same, but it is reported that the attack was quickly blocked.
So essentially, the hackers gained access to the Opera Sync Systems. These servers store user synchronised passwords and account information. It is reported that hackers might have gotten several passwords and account information may have been compromised. Opera recommends all its users to change their passwords, and the company has sent out emails for the same. One of the company officials from Opera stated that the company only stores encrypted or hashed and salted passwords in the system.

So now Opera wants users to change their passwords as a precautionary measure. Hence it is encouraging users to who have synced their accounts with third-party apps to reset their passwords. The company also sent out emails to all opera sync users to inform them about the same. As mentioned, they have also asked to change the credentials in the mail. It is also reported that although the total number of Opera users is around 350 million, only 1.7 million approx active users use Opera Sync.
This is, in fact, less than 0.5 percent of total active users. So this data only indicates that the possible damage due to this breach may be very less indeed. However, still, those 1.7 million user’s data might be at risk, which may have some important passwords, etc. The company stated that it takes all the info of each and every user seriously, and this issue will definitely be taken care of. They have also apologised for the same. If you are one of the users who uses Opera Sync services, then click here to reset your password now. Stay tuned for more info on this.
