LG Finally launched the LG G6 smartphone today at MWC 2017 show floor, and now we officially have our first look at the device. Although we pretty much knew everything about the smartphone, it is finally nice to have the device out in all its glory. Having said that, a lot of people are actually confused and wondering if the new LG G6 smartphone which the company launched today is any good in comparison to what we got from them last year. Well, there’s only one way to find it, and that’s what we are going to do here. Let’s put both the smartphones side by side and compare them to which one excels in various departments.
Design
LG G6 comes with a Metal frame and glass back body
The design of the LG
G5 was not all that great, to begin with. However, that is not the case with the LG G6 here. The LG G6 comes with a Metal frame and glass back body which is something new for LG as we have only seen polycarbonate body from them in the G series of smartphones. The LG G6 will be available in three different color options, and it will be ditching the Modular design which was the USP of the last year’s G5 smartphone. The LG G6, on the other hand, has a unique display with 18:9 aspect ratio that occupies about 90-percent of the front of the smartphone.
The new LG G6 measures in at about 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9mm which is better in comparison to last year’s LG G5 coming in at 149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7mm. As we can see that the dimensions are more or less similar, but we are indeed packing a huge display on the front this time around. And finally, the LG G6 is rated IP68 waterproof and dustproof, which is a major upgrade in terms of design since the G5 lacked the certification due to the modular design. Overall, the LG G6 is a huge upgrade in terms of design, and it is nice to see LG stepping up their design game this time around.
Hardware
LG G6 is not a huge upgrade from the LG G5 in terms of internal hardware
In terms of the hardware, the LG G6 is not a huge upgrade though from the LG G5. Yes, we don’t have the Snapdragon 835 here with the G6, but we do have the
821 which is better than the 820 on the G5. In terms of the RAM, we have the same 4GB with an option to get in either 32GB or a 64GB config, and we also have a microSD card support. But we do have an improved battery in the G6 coming in at 3300mAh, which is indeed nice to have since we have a bigger display this time around, although, do make a note that it is not removable.
In terms of the camera, we have a dual rear camera setup again this year as well, but instead of a 16MP + 8MP sensor like last year, we have dual 13MP sensors on the G6 this year. One of these will offer a 125-degree wide-angle lens as well. On the front, we have a 5MP wide-angle sensor on the front on the G6. Do make a note that the G5 had an 8MP sensor at the front with a f/2.0 aperture.
Software
LG G6 comes with Google Assistant
LG has apparently put a lot of emphasis on the software side of things as well this year and for the LG G6, we have a new Optimus
UX 6.0 interface which will be running on top of the Nougat. And most importantly, the company is also throwing in the Google Assistant with the new UI which is going to be a major advantage since the feature was only available on the Pixel smartphones up until now. While the LG G5 was launched with the Marshmallow, it is now running on Nougat. But the new UI with the G6 has a lot of new features which are designed to take advantage of the 18:9 aspect ratio of the display.
Conclusion
Overall, the LG G6 is a step above the last year’s G5
To wrap this up, it is safe to say that LG G6 is a breath of fresh air since we have a lot of new things from LG. It is definitely an upgrade from the LG G5 from last year and it was very much expected since it is a new flagship afterall. We cannot vouch for the overall user experience of the smartphone just yet since we haven’t spent a lot of time with the smartphone and compared them in real time scenarios. Talking purely based on the specs and upgrades, the G6 is definitely a step above the LG G5 in terms of design, hardware and software overall. We highly hope that the LG G6 out performs the LG G5 whereever it felt short. With that said, we suggest you to wait until the end of MWC 2017 before making up your mind on buying the new LG G6 since we have a lot new smartphones lined up. Let us know what do you think about the new LG G6 smartphone and be sure to stay tuned to PhoneRadar for more updates from MWC 2017.
