That’s right; we are back again with another smartphone comparison, and this time around, we have two budget-centric smartphone options that are out there in the market. The two smartphones which we are looking at here is the Panasonic Eluga Ray Max and the Moto G5. Now Moto G5 is obviously the one which most people already know about and familiar with, and that is mainly due to the Moto brand and also the popularity of the Moto G series of smartphones. However, the Panasonic Eluga Ray Max is also a good option if you are in the market for a budget-centric smartphone. But how good is the Panasonic Eluga Ray Max? Well, let’s find out now.

Design

Talking about the Design of both of these devices, the Moto G5 has a new design which is a major departure from the last year’s Moto G4. For a budget-centric smartphone, the Moto G5 looks and feels somewhat premium as well, which is always a nice thing to have. However, the Panasonic Eluga Ray Max is also equally good when it comes to design. We are not looking at a top notch quality build here, but considering the budget i.e. the price of these devices, it is quite good. The Eluga Ray Max follows more of a mainstream design which is quite common these days in the market which most smartphone has.

 

From the front, both the devices look more or less similar as there is nothing much other than the display and the fingerprint scanner/ home button. The back is where we see a lot of changes. The Moto G5 has a circular camera modular at the back which is quite big in comparison to other devices in the market today. Both the smartphones have the same thickness with the Eluga Ray Max being slightly heavier than the Moto G5. Overall, to quickly sum it up, both the devices have good design and build quality, however, the Moto G5 looks more fresh, which many will prefer for the most part.

Hardware

In terms of the internal specs, both the devices stand pretty much in the same lane. The Moto G5 has a 5″ IPS LCD on the front with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. The Eluga Ray Max also has an IPS LCD, but it is slightly bigger coming in at 5.2″. The Eluga Ray Max, however, has Gorilla Glas protection if that is something which you are looking for. The Moto G5 lacks that and it only has a standard scratch resistant display. Internally, both the Eluga Ray Max & Moto G5 are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC, however, the Eluga Ray Max has 4GB RAM, whereas the Moto G5 maxes out at 3GB. The Eluga Ray Max even has more internal memory coming in at 64GB which is higher than 32GB on the Moto G5. But this should not bother you much since both of them can be expanded upto 256GB more if in case you run out of memory.

Now, coming to the camera side of things, the Moto G5 has a 13Mp rear facing camera with a f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash. On the front, there is a 5MP sensor with a F/2.2 aperture. This camera is not exceptional, but it gets the job done for the most part. The Eluga Ray Max, on the other hand, has a 16MP sensor at the back with a LED flash. On the front also, it has an 8MP sensor which is again more than the one on the Moto G5. So if Megapixel count means something to you, then you should totally go with the Eluga Ray Max. But from what we have experienced, the camera on the Eluga Ray Max is pretty good. The Battery on the Moto G5 is 2,800 mAh battery which is smaller than the 3,000 mAh on the Eluga Ray Max. Eluga Ray Max also has Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 support which the Moto G5 lacks. So overall, the Eluga Ray Max seems to have a slight edge over the Moto G5. So if you are a spec head and always want the best for the money, then no doubt you are getting more with the Eluga Ray Max.

Software

Since the internal hardware on both of these devices is not all that different, the user experience mainly depends on the software. And as we all know, Moto G5 has a near stock Android, which you can’t go wrong with. The software on the Eluga Ray Max is also not that bad, but most people would prefer the stock feel of the Moto G5. But more than the experience, we need to see how the software matures over time. While this is something we can tell only after an extended period of usage, we can certainly vouch for the Moto G5 since we know how software on the Moto smartphones ages over time. However, to give an idea on which one is the best, both of them should do just fine when it comes to day-to-day usage.

The Eluga Ray Max also has a new assistant called the Arbo. This is the company’s own virtual assistant and it works decently for the most part. It majorly just pulls data from the settings and shows you info like the most recently used apps and also suggests you apps depending on your usage. With our time of usage of the device, it worked just fine for the most part, but we don’t see much use for it since it is not something that people would use more than Google’s in-house assistant. Hence don’t let this alone be a deciding factor while buying the device.

Verdict

Overall, to sum it up, both the devices are quite good at what they do but there are a few areas that you need to focus on. Coming to the price, the Moto G5 is priced at 11,999 INR for the 3GB variant, whereas, the Eluga Ray Max is priced at 11,499 INR and it comes with an upgraded RAM of 4GB giving it a lead. The Panasonic Eluga Ray Max looks like a good package overall for the price & the special AI offering of the ARBO. With a Rs 500 higher price than the Moto G5, you are essentially getting more RAM as well as storage which is going to prove beneficial in the longer run. Even the battery on the Eluga Ray Max is larger that comes equipped with the Quick Charge 3.0 for faster charging.

Hence, if you are in the market to buy a smartphone at this price bracket, then we recommend you checking out the Eluga Ray Max from Panasonic.
