Alcatel Launches Idol 5 Smartphone & Uni360 VR Headset in the U.S

At the IFA 2017 event, Alcatel unveiled four new smartphones including the Idol 5 and Idol 5s. Now, the company has launched the Idol 5 smartphone in the U.S with few changes. Apart from the few internal upgrades, the Idol 5 in the U.S comes with front-facing stereo speakers and a dedicated hardware key called as Now Key. There is also a VR headset called Uni360 which works with any smartphone sporting 5″ to 6″ screen size. Both the Idol 5 smartphone and Uni360 VR headset are priced at $200 and $50 respectively. They will be available exclusively on Cricket Wireless starting October 27th.

It sports an Aluminum body with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on the front. Talking about the specifications of the Idol 5, it comes with a 5.2-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) LTPS display on the front. Under the hood is the 64-bit MediaTek Helio P20 octa-core processor coupled with Mali-T880 MP2. It includes 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There is also a MicroSD card slot for expanding the storage additionally up to 256 GB. The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with minimal customizations to the stock UI.

There is a 12MP camera on the rear with PDAF+ CAF and dual tone LED flash. For selfies, the Idol 5 offers a 5MP front camera with LED flash. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, FM Radio, GPS, A-GPS, NFC, 3.5mm audio port, and USB Type-C port. It is backed by a 2,850mAh non-removable battery and also supports MediaTek’s Pump Express fast charging technology which can charge the device from 0% to 100% in 100 minutes. According to the company, the Idol 5 can give up to 23.8 hours of talk time and lasts up to 21 days on standby mode.

With the NFC support, the Idol 5 can also be used for mobile payments via Android Pay. The Idol 5 smartphone measures 148.08 x 71.88 x 7.62 mm and weighs around 147 grams. It also packs a bunch of sensors including Accelerometer, Ambient Light, Proximity, E-Compass, Gyro, and Hall Switch. While the volume rocker and Now Key are placed on the right edge, the power button is on the left edge. The user can customize the Now Key for different actions like launching a favorite app or capturing a selfie.
