Facebook India to offer Free WiFi on Indian Railway Stations soon

Earlier this year, Google announced the launch of its free high-speed public Wi-Fi service in some cities in India. The company is aiming to bring this free high-speed public Wi-Fi services to about 100 cities in total by the end of this year. This is an excellent initiative, and the company is getting full support from the Indian Government for the same as well. Previously, Google also got approved from the Government of India to test out the Project Loon in the country.

Now on the same lines, we have the Social Media giant Facebook, which is going to join hands on this one. Chairman of Indian Railways, Mr RK Bahuguna stated that they would start communication with Facebook for expanding its Wi-Fi services. While reporting about this, he also stated that this service will not only be limited Railway stations but will also be provided to villages in the vicinity. He stated that Facebook India approached them with this Wi-Fi initiative and the talks for the same will began shortly.

These services will be offered in conjunction with RailTel. RailTel has a readily available optic fibre-based network across some 4,000 railway stations in the country. It is also reported that with this initiative, they will be able to offer data services up to a 10-km radius from a connected rail stop. The same can be increased by up to 25 km via additional access points. Facebook India is currently in talks with various internet service firms for the Express Wi-Fi expansion in the country.

It is expected that if proper funds are allocated Universal Service Obligation, it can extend the programme to as many as 40,000 villages surrounding 4,000 Internet-ready railway stations across the country.
