Xiaomi Launches Mi Box Android TV Set-Top Box in the US for $69

Xiaomi, the Chinese electronics company that is known for its smartphones and various other smart devices such as IoT products and fitness bands has launched a new product in the United States today. It is their Android OS enabled Set-top box called Mi Box. While the brand has yet to official launch their smartphone series in the country, they sure have lots of accessories & smart devices to sale in the country. The Mi Box is now one of them.

Roughly priced at Rs 4600 in Indian currency exchange, the new Mi Box offers to stream 4K content at 60fps (frame per second). In terms of the hardware specification, it has an 8GB of internal storage for storing media content. It is available for sale on company’s official online store in the United States. In the United States, there are many Android OS based Set-top box that claims to be popular, while the closest that might have come are costly and not quite friendly when it comes to user interface. Whereas Xiaomi claims that it’s Mi Box is an affordable set-top box that can turn your average TV into smart TV.

This standalone set-top box runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow interface customised for TV viewing. It can be used to stream 4K video content. On top of that, there is a support of Google Cast, which allows you to cast content from your phone/tablet directly to the Set-Top Box. You can also stream through a set of apps like Netflix, YouTube Sling TV, Vudu, FandangoNow and other tonnes of services available in the country via Mi Box.

This square looking set-top box is powered by a Quad-core ARM chipset with Cortex A53 cores and a GPU companion in form of Mali 450. There is a 2GB of RAM and 8GB of inbuilt storage onboard the device for all your media storage needs. In terms of connectivity, it has a USB port, a Bluetooth remote control. Do make a note that the Bluetooth remote controller has a button to activate voice search. So, you can enjoy voice search on the Mi Box, which is a convenient way to searching from a large library.

Regarding the standards, the brand touts that it supports 4K video content streaming at 60 frames per second. It supports audio standards such as Dolby Digital Plus and DTS Surround Sound. There is a support of HDR10 Standard technology that is said to improve contrast, brightness and colour output without losing clarity and sharpness of the content. It supports HDMI 2.0 cables that are the latest in HDMI standard TV connectivity. The Mi Box is currently available in the United States only, the availability in other international markets is unknown.
