Airtel VoLTE Service Debuts in Mumbai, List of Compatible Smartphones

You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.

Airtel has finally launched its VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service in India. Last week, a few reports have unofficially confirmed about this launch. The Airtel VoLTE service is now available only in Mumbai and will be soon expanded to other Indian Metro cities. With this, Airtel becomes the first incumbent service provider to launch VoLTE service. Reliance backed Jio 4G offers only VoLTE service and it won’t with 3G or 2G smartphones. On the other hand, the Airtel users with VoLTE enabled smartphones can take advantage of the VoLTE service.

Unlike Jio 4G, those with 2G or 3G handsets can still get the Airtel services. With the VoLTE network, the users can make HD voice calls. Compared to the normal voice calls, the calls made through VoLTE network will connect three times faster. The users can also access the internet while making calls. While Jio 4G is offering the voice calls for free, Airtel is still charging the VoLTE calls. Even though VoLTE calls use data, there won’t be data charges. Instead, the company will be charging same as the per existing plan.

To use the Airtel VoLTE service, the customers need to update the software of their smartphone by clicking on the link sent through an SMS. Once the VoLTE service on a particular connection is enabled, the customer has to keep the data switched on to make the VoLTE calls. In the areas where there is no 4G VoLTE service, the company will be using the existing 2G and 3G bands to provide the regular services. All the supported Android smartphones will display the HD/VoLTE icon in the notification bar on the top.
