Apple iPhone 7 Plus with Dual Rear Cameras Lack Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)

Apple will be making their iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones official on September 7th. This year, we will be seeing some drastic changes when coming to the design or specifications part. Until last year, Apple used to give the features that are already present on Android for few years, but now the company is bringing at least few innovative features almost on par with the Android devices. While the design change for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is certainly expected compared to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus.

The form factor of the upcoming iPhones looks similar to the 2014 and 2015 iPhones. There is no curved display or the modularity, but the upcoming iPhones skips the 3.5mm audio port. The rear of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus looks more clearer as the Antenna bands are now curved alongside the top and bottom edges. The physical home button is said to be replaced with the capacitive button but includes TouchID just like older iPhones. The iPhone 7 comes with slightly bigger camera sensor when compared to the last-gen iPhones.

On the other hand, the iPhone 7 Plus sports dual rear camera setup and the leaked images confirm there will be slight camera bump. Though there are $150 Android smartphones that come with dual rear camera setup, the one device that really impressed me is the Huawei P9 (Review) which showed the complete advantage of having both RGB and Monochrome sensors. None of the dual cameras smartphones had the Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Even the upcoming iPhone 7 Plus sacrifices the OIS whereas the iPhone 7 that sports a single camera sensor features OIS.

In the last two years, Apple provided OIS only with the iPhone 6 Plus and 6S Plus and now in 2017, its reversed, the iPhone 7 has OIS which is missing on iPhone 7 Plus. The reason behind it is the magnetic interference that disturbs other sensors stability. Though one of the two sensors can be equipped with OIS, we think the results will not be as perfect as having dual OIS. The source also mentioned that both Huawei and Apple have already started to work on bringing the OIS to smartphones with dual camera sensors.

While Huawei has done a great job with dual cameras on Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, let’s wait for couple more days to see how Apple uses the dual camera sensors. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for more official information!
