Apple to use Plastic curved OLED panels for next year’s iPhone
You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.
The upcoming Apple iPhone 8 is probably one of the most talked about smartphone of all time. This is mainly due to all the hype that is circulated around the internet regarding the whole design change and everything. None of it is confirmed, but it is expected that the company will be launching a completely redesigned handset which will follow a different design language. Talking about new iPhone design changes, we now have new reports which claim that the company will be using plastic curved OLED displays for the new iPhones that will curve over the sides as well.
According to the source, Apple has ordered these plastic curved OLED displays from none other than the South Korean electronics giant, Samsung. It has been reported that Samsung is capable of supplying about 100 million units of curved OLED displays to Apple for the time being. Well, looking at all this info, it does looks like we will be seeing curved plastic displays on the new iPhones. While we have no confirmation on the same, it will be interesting to see how this turns out in the end. In fact, this is quite unusual of Apple for deciding to use plastic curved OLED panels.
Apple has always relied on Gorilla Glass for all the iPhones till date. Also considering the fact the iPhone 7 & 7 Plus, as well as the Apple Watch both, had curved glass displays, it is unclear as to why Apple is deciding to use plastic version for the same. It could be possible that they are trying to implement a wrap-around display and hence they have decided on this. And talking about the wrap-around display, it has also been reported that the next-gen iPhone will come with an ‘all-glass’design with the fingerprint scanner integrated into the screen. If this design turns out to be true, the iPhone 8 will have a true bezel-less design or at least something close to the recently launched Xiaomi Mi MIX.
Apple is also planning to implement something called as ‘sensing technology’ which will allow the iPhone to detect when the users touch the phone to pick it up and not just the display. And lastly, to top it all off, the company is expected to launch multiple variants of next year’s iPhone where only one of the variant will have all these new features and redesigned body, etc. The other variants are expected to sport similar design language with some specs bump and they could be called the iPhone 7s & 7s Plus. Do make a note that none of this info is confirmed directly from the company and these are just speculations.
