BlackBerry Joins ‘Make in India’ Initiative, will manufacture devices in Country

Canadian smartphone manufacturer Blackberry planned to make its devices in India. For that company partnered with Optiemus Infracom and will make Android devices in India for Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh as well. BlackBerry is already in partnership with Optiemus Infracom to distribute and sell the DTEK50 and DTEK60 smartphones. The company said that with this move it is also supporting the Government’s ‘Make in India’ move.
In a statement Blackberry said,” With this latest regional deal, BlackBerry has now achieved full global coverage for licensees in all markets to manufacture BlackBerry-branded devices, proving the company is delivering on its licensing strategy and accelerating its transition to being a leading security software and services company.”
With this partnership, BlackBerry will give license of its security software and service suit to the Optiemus Infracom. Optiemus will design, manufacture, sell, promote and will provide customer support for BlackBerry devices. Optiemus will also provide Android Secure software for the devices sold in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. While on the other hand, BlackBerry itself provide the Android Security update for its devices.
BlackBerry used to be a big player in the smartphone segment. But from last some years it lost everything to Apple and Samsung. The company even struggling to survive. The company used to launch smartphones with the own operating system. But the popularity of Android forced it to launch an Android powered BlackBerry device. With new Android devices. The company wants to regain the momentum that it lost. The company had taken various steps as well for that. The company partnered with third-party companies to manufacture hardware and distribute them in different countries.
BlackBerry Senior Vice -President, General Manager, Mobility Solutions Alex Thurber said,“India is a very important market for BlackBerry, so we are delighted our latest licensing partnership will extend the BlackBerry software experience to more customers and support the Indian government’s Make In India agenda. This is an important milestone in our strategy to put the smart in the phone, providing state-of-the-ert security and device software on a platform relevant to mobile customers, with more localisation”.
Ashok Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, said with the company’s strong play in the mobile ecosystem in manufacturing, retail, distribution, and support, it is confident that the journey with BlackBerry will be a long and successful one. Recently, Karnataka Government also confirmed that Apple would start manufacturing iPhones in India from April.
