Analyst Predicts Production Uncertainties For Qualcomm’s On-Screen Fingerprint Scanner

You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.

A couple of days back, Qualcomm showcased its new on-screen fingerprint scanner at Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. The smartphone to feature this new technology is the one from Vivo and the company showcased the same as well at the show floor. The fact that Qualcomm had managed to nail this technology and successfully implement it on a smartphone, gave a sense of confidence that upcoming Apple iPhone will also have this technology. However, now analysts are predicting that Qualcomm’s new technology is not ready to enter mass production yet.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, confidently says that Qualcomm’s solution isn’t close to shipping. According to him, the technology is certainly an improvement, however, it is far from perfect and still needs a lot of work. Apparently, Qualcomm’s implementation offers better scan-through, however, it has a lot of areas of concern to be addressed like speed and response time. He further explains that there are a handful of mass-production uncertainties for this on-screen fingerprint technology.

According to Kuo, Qualcomm needs to make sure that this technology works through the thinner cover glass and flexible OLED panels as well. Considering the fact that most smartphones will be sporting these glass panels, it is essential that it is being taken care of. And one of the most important thing which Kuo pointed out, is the fact that users are completely fine with having a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Well, i that case, most manufacturers won’t bother adopting this technology.

Lastly, Kuo concluded by saying that, there is in fact, no clear mass-production timeline for Vivo’s showcase of Qualcomm’s under-display fingerprint recognition. With that all being said, it remains to be seen if Apple manages to implement the on-screen fingerprint scanner effectively. The fact that Qualcomm’s implementation, which has already been showcased itself is not yet ready for production, makes us wonder if Apple will manage to implement it, in time for the iPhone 8 to enter mass production. Let us know what do you think about this. Do you think Apple iPhone 8 will have an on-screen fingerprint scanner? Leave a comment down below, letting us know your thoughts.
