Google dropped the development plans for Project Ara, may not be launching anytime soon

Project Ara, Google’s dream of building its own true modular phone with interchangeable parts is now reportedly cancelled. It is reported that the company will license the technology to other partners to take it forward. So we may never see a working phone of this kind ever from Google. Well, the decision is said to be a part of an effort to unify Google’s hardware development under former Motorola president Rick Osterloh.

Google reported some new advancements with the project a couple of months back at the Google I/O 2016 and they also stated that the company will launch a developer version of the same this fall. The consumer version was also slated for a release for 2017. But now it may be delayed further with all the fiasco. But at least it is safe to say that the project is not completely dead and we will eventually see some sort of device in future from this program.

And if you wanted a working smartphone from Google, then you are not out of luck as they are launching the new Pixel smartphones on October 4th. And moreover, Google will be anyway working with these partners to bring up the project and help it reach the consumers. Also, do make a note that Project Ara was first announced by Motorola nearly three years ago.

The project was initially developed by the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects group. Google held on to this company after they sold the Motorola Mobility to Lenovo.
