The Russian smartphone maker, YotaPhone has introduced a new trend by launching the dual screen smartphone featuring one regular primary display on the front and an e-ink display on the rear. Though the concept looked interesting, it isn’t commercially successful. One of the factors that made YotaPhone’s concept a failure is its priced tag, while Chinese smartphone with even better specifications are available at half of price of YotaPhone and not many showed interested in paying that extra money for the secondary e-ink display. However, the manufacturing process is now shifted from Russia and Finland to China, and as usual, we will see more affordable YotaPhones from now on.

In between, another Chinese company Hisense showcased the Hisense A2 smartphone that comes with dual display design as on YotaPhone at the IFA 2016. Now the device is certified by TENAA and official launch can be expected soon at least in China. It is the successor to the Hisense A1 that came with a dual camera setup. Talking about the Hisense A2, it additionally featured the earpiece and sensors on top of both the regular display and e-ink display. The device comes with an all-metal body featuring a 2.5D glass on the front. On the front of the device is a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution. Whereas the e-ink display on the rear comes with a screen size of 5.17-inches and qHD (960 x 540 pixels) resolution.

It is powered by 64-bit Snapdragon 430 octa-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz. There is 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage on this device that can be further expandable via MicroSD card slot. The Hisense A2 sports a 16MP rear camera with LED flash and a 5MP front camera. Instead, the user can use the 16MP primary camera for selfies with the black and white e-ink display. It has a power button on the right edge that comes integrated with the fingerprint sensor, as seen on the Sony Xperia smartphones. The device is backed by a 3,000mAh non-removable battery that can give a day of usage. It runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box with the customized UI on top.

The device supports dual SIM dual standby and includes basic connectivity options like 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and MicroUSB 2.0 port. It measures 157.25 × 76.8 × 8.4 mm and weighs 190 grams. The Hisense A1 that was launched earlier this year came with the same 5.5-inch AMOLED display but lacks the e-ink display. It is powered by Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor and coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The device features a 13MP dual rear cameras and a 5MP selfie camera on the front. This device came with a physical home button on the front that comes integrated with a fingerprint sensor. Stay tuned on Phone Radar for the official launch details of the Hisense A2 smartphone.
