Samsung officially announces its AI Powered Voice Assistant Bixby

AI powered voice assistant is the next big thing in the world of smartphones, and we already have a bunch of them in the market. Apple‘s Siri is far from perfect, but it is still used by millions of people on a daily basis. Google also announced the new Google Assistant last year and now it is currently serving a huge chunk of Android users. We also have Cortana from Microsoft, and the list goes on. However, the newest one to debut in the market later this month will be Samsung‘s, Bixby. Yes, highly anticipated AI-powered voice assistant by Samsung is now official.

The company has finally made it official now, and the Assistant will debut or make its first appearance on the upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone, which is going to be launching later this month. According to the company, Bixby is not just your average Assistant who will answer your basic “What’s the weather outside?” questions. It is meant to be a helper on your device so that you as the end users can use your device more efficiently. Apparently, it is designed in a way that it understands the way you use your device and adapts to you.

While we don’t have much info on how the assistant will work, the company states that when a particular application is Bixby enabled, it will be able to perform any given task within the app once the user calls for it. In short, it will understand what exactly you are looking at the display and will help you get things done easily by coming up with actions to take. While this sounds very similar what Google is doing with their assistant, Samsung’s head of research and development for software and services, Dr. Injong Rhee says Bixby’s purpose is to change user behavior from just using the touch commands.

Now for most people, this might not be an ideal Google Assistant replacement since Bixby does not have the vast amount of knowledge and this is exactly Samsung is also not trying to compete with the likes of Google Assistant, etc. Instead, Samsung is going with a simple approach and help users get the most out their devices. And this is ultimately going to make the user experience a whole lot better. Eventually, Samsung also plans to bring Bixby to other devices as well like TV, wearables, etc. which obviously makes sense since all the devices will be connected smartly.

Bixby can be triggered with the help of a hardware button and according to Dr. Rhee, having a hardware button solves a lot of problems. The company is also planning to release an SDK to third-party developers to further expand the assistant’s capabilities. With that said, it will be interesting to see how Bixby performs in day-to-day tasks. There is no denying that Bixby will get over time and initially it will require some polishing.
