Samsung’s Patent reimagines Smartwatches with a secondary display
You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.
Patents filed by various companies is always fun to take a look at mainly because we get to understand what the company has in its mind when it comes to the future of their products. Recently we saw how Apple is trying to turn your iPhones and iPads into a Macbook by putting them into a laptop shell. On the same lines, we have a report which shows us what Samsung may end up implementing in one of its future smart watches. A secondary display!
While the idea of having a secondary display on a smartwatch sounds like an absurd plan but Samsung may have just mastered the plan and has come up with one of the best implementation we could possibly think about. Talking about Samsung’s smartwatches, one of the most standout features is the rotating bezel and what other way to upgrade its smart watch lineup other than bringing changes to the rotating bezels, right? Samsung has filed a patent application for a screen-equipped dial, and it is expected that it will use this feature in one of the future variants.
Samsung Gear S3 Frontier Review – Tough to the Core
What this essentially means is having a curved display throughout the front of the watch which would allow users to take a glance at the content at the edge of the display. This kind of sounds like the Edge display on its current flagship, and it definitely is quite similar. However, it is yet to be seen if this is even possible since this would need them to make a 360-degree curved display. Also, even if the company manages to make it happen, don’t expect it to the cheapest smartwatch out there.
Besides that, there are a couple of other issues here as well. First of all, there will be a problem of rotation. As we all know that the current smartwatches from Samsung have a 360-degree rotation whereas the one mentioned in the filing specifies only a 90-degree rotation. On top this, the patent describes the screen to have two separate parts as supposed to one and both of these displays will be stacked on top of each other. Looking at all these intricate details, it certainly does looks like the company has given a thought onto this. However, even they manage to achieve this, the software experience will also play a huge role here.
Having said that, we suggest you not to have any high hopes with this since it is still resting in the form of a patent. And as we all know how patents work since most of them never make it out to the real world out there. Meanwhile, be sure to let us know what do you think about this?
