This smartphone concept has a Quad Camera setup without a camera bump

Smartphone cameras have gotten so much better now in comparison to what we had a couple of years ago. The images and the videos were taken on a smartphone camera are very much comparable to something that we would get out of professional cameras. However, this kind of quality improvement does come with a price, and in this case, it is the hardware itself. Most of the modern day smartphones now come with a camera bump at the back which can get really annoying. Most people won’t even notice it, but for others, it is definitely a deal breaker.

Speaking of which, we have something very unusual here today. What if we told you that it is possible to fit a great quality camera in a slim body? Yes, it is indeed possible, and we have a working prototype for the same as well. The engineers over at Fraunhofer Institute demonstrated a slide-out camera module which is thin enough to fit inside any reasonably sized smartphone out there. However, don’t think that it is not a powerful camera since it just slides out. In fact, it is probably one of the most powerful setups you might have seen till date.

The prototype which we are discussing here has a whopping four image sensor setup. Each of them rotates 90 degrees since the sensors slide out from the side of the smartphone instead of the top. There are tiny mirrors at the front and rear of these sensors that reflects the image to it. Apparently, the engineers tried out a single mirror system initially and it failed in close range. That resulted in adding another pair of mirrors which made them stitch the resultant images to create one full image. But there also they faced stitching issues and hence finally they decided to simply add an extra pair of sensors itself.

Now the camera setup which we are discussing here is capable of capturing images at a 20MP resolution which is definitely a good number. It also has autofocus and OIS i.e. optical image stabilization to further improve the overall quality. However, this particular setup does have a lot of drawbacks. First of all, it is not that simple to cramp in four image sensors inside the phone and lot of tricks needs to be pulled off for that. And secondly, this setup will also be extremely power hungry since we are talking about four sensors in work here.

However, considering the current smartphone scenario, nothing seems to be impossible and we hope that this also becomes a reality one day or the other.
