The 300 Crore Hyderabad City Wi-Fi Project Launched with 1,000 Hotspots in Public Places

You are reading a story from PhoneRadar.

City Wi-Fi projects have been a long overdue in the country. However, now the Telangana State Government has announced a new initiative today in Hyderabad. This new initiative is called Hyderabad City Wi-Fi Project which also goes by the name ‘Hy-Fi’ in short. Under this initiative, the Government has decided to deploy over 1000 hot spots across the state capital. It has been reported that the number 1000 is just an initial number and soon i.e over the course of time it will cross over 3000 hotspots in the city.

The same was confirmed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor B Rammohan. It was pointed out that there are about 3,000 public locations within the city. Telangana IT Secretary Jayesh Ranjan addressed the same and said that close to 1,000 installations have been set up so far. He also stated that the remaining 2,000 locations will be covered within the course of next 3 months.

It has been pointed out that in June 2015, under the Digital Telangana campaign, the Government of Telangana had kickstarted this initiative. At that time, the Government partnered with a bunch of ISPs to provide free 30 minutes Wi-Fi. This was setup in about 100 public locations across the city like malls, tourist spots, offices, etc. However, now is when it is taking shape and it is being expanded. And this time, in fact, the Government has separate orders in place to enable smooth execution of the program for ISPs.

It is also worth noting that the project will be further expanded to Telangana’s Warangal, Karimnagar and Khammam districts. Once things move in smoothly, the extension of the same to other regions will be initiated. Also, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) is technical advisor of this project. We hope this will be executed smoothly and we all will get to take advantage of this service. We certainly need more and more services like this, so that the people can take advantage of it. Wi-Fi Dabba is another project which we had reported about earlier, that offers internet connectivity. However, it is not free and users need to pay for it to be able to use it.
