Google’s own Smartphone to be launched this year to Compete with Apple iPhone
The Nexus line of smartphones is known for its pure unadulterated Android experience. While Google develops the software, the hardware of these Nexus flagships are manufactured by different OEMs almost every year. Last year, we had two Nexus devices, the Nexus 6P manufactured by Huawei and the Nexus 5X manufactured by LG, targeting both premium and pocket-friendly categories for the market. Before that, Motorola manufactured the Nexus 6.
According to a new rumor, the company behind the software is also expected to make their own smartphones as well. Yes, Google is planning to manufacture the Nexus smartphone themselves. According to the source, this information was provided to a publication by a senior source. Google is currently in talks with Wireless carriers to launch its own smartphone line-up.
If this happens, then it would have better control over the software and allow the company to compete iPhone directly. Unlike Apple, Google allows OEMs like Samsung, LG, etc. to manufacture devices and run it’s software version with a little customization over it. According to the same source, this device made by Google will see the light of the day by the end of this year. This means the company might just surprise us by launching the new Nexus manufactured by them and ditch other OEMs for the same.
But we doubt the possibility of this happening this year, as we already have lots of other rumors pointing towards Nexus smartphone manufactured by HTC. However, we have no confirmation on this officially from the company. Most probably, the company might take up this initiative and launch the self-manufactured Nexus devices next year. Also, this is isn’t the first time we are hearing about some hardware being manufactured by the company. Earlier at Google I/O 2016, they also announced that they will be making the Daydream VR headsets to go with its own platform. It will be no surprise if the company manufactures its own smartphones that would be compatible with this platform.
Google is taking a lot of steps to make sure it’s pure Android software reaches as many markets as possible. On the similar lines, the company also launched the Android One Series of smartphones by partnering with various OEMs to manufacture affordable pocket-friendly phones. And now this initiative looks very similar to what Microsoft did with its Surface line-up. The company manufactured its own hardware to go along with its software, which did not turn many heads in the market. Do you think it’s a good decision by the company to manufacture its own hardware or not? Let us know. And stay tuned for more updates on this.
