Fact: First Phone Call was Made on a Motorola Phone in 1973 with a 1.1Kg Phone

There are lots of events in the history that people like to keep track of; while these days Google makes sure that if there is any historical event on the current day, they try to make its users aware of that through the Google Doodles. This has become kind of a tradition for the company, and it’s a good tradition. You might know this or not, although, we would like to remind/aware you about one fact that was the crucial point in history, which has lead to the foundation of mobile phones as we know.

In 1973, April 3rd, a Motorola engineer named Martin Cooper made the first mobile phone call. It was made by a prototype of what would later become to be Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, the world’s first commercial phone, weighted 1.1Kg. Yes, this was the time when a mobile phone call was first witnessed. It was made in the New York City, United States. The engineer had to stand near a 900MHz base station on Sixth Avenue, between 53rd and 54th streets in the city. The call was placed to the Bell Labs HQ (Head Quarters) in New Jersey.

The essence of the call is lost to history, although, it might not be comparable to other achievements of humans in terms of the communication. Such as first Telegram- “What hath God Wrought”, first telephone call- “Mr. Watson come here, I want to see you” and first text message- “Merry Christmas”. Talking about what Mr. Cooper said in the first ever phone call, “I’m ringing you just to see if my call sounds good at your end, or something to that effect”.

So, what if the words spoke were not as paramount, but the achievement was itself supreme in nature. Because it was a major step in the development of mobile technology. But understand, it took another decade for DynaTAC to reach consumers, and further two more decades for cell phones to overtake land lines usage worldwide. The phone cost a bomb at $3,995 in the year 1984 when it first went on sale. But nowadays that technology is available for as cheap as buying a vegetable in a market.

In today’s world, the word “phone” has become synonymous with “mobile phone”, while the current trend of communication is shifting. Who knows what will be the communication device we will be using down the line in coming decades.
