Moxi to Launch Bendable Smartphone at $762 that Bend like Bracelets
At the ongoing SID Display Week 2016 conference, Samsung showcased the foldable displays. The company is also rumored to launch the Galaxy X smartphone using this same display technology. While the rumors suggest the device to be launched only in 2017, we can actually see a foldable device in the market from a Chinese startup in 2016. The Moxi Group, a little startup based out of Chongqing, China is the manufacturer if this bendable smartphone.
As of now, this bendable device is only limited to China and the company is planning to ship around 1,00,000 units in 2016 alone. Coming to the pricing, each unit cost 5000 Yuan (approx $762 / Rs. 51,200) and based on the demand from outside of its home country; the company might also plan to ship the device to overseas markets. The device comes in a large rectangular shape, and when rolled up, it can be worn as a bracelet around the wrist.
For making the screen completely bendable, the company had chosen to keep the battery, processor, and other components at the bottom edge of the device. Talking about the bendable display, the Moxi will be using the Graphene display that will be very thin and offers much brighter colors. Even the battery consumption will be lower resulting in better battery life. Even Samsung announced that the Graphene displays will be the important factor in Wearable devices.
Importantly the device will be shipped with Black & White display even though the images and demo units suggests a color display. This is not the first time Moxi will be using the Graphene displays. The company had partnered with Galapad, another Chinese manufacturer in 2015 to launch the Galapad Settler, the first ever smartphone with Graphene display. The device was priced at 2499 Yuan and runs on Android OS.
While Samsung came with the 5.7-inch foldable/bendable display recently, LG had already showcased their 18-inch prototype at CES 2016 held in January in Las Vegas. Even Nokia also demoed the bi-fold and tri-fold displays in early 2014, but still there is no update over that. Starting with the Samsung, we can expect many other manufacturers to work on the bendable device which gives the device a different identity from the current bar-shaped smartphones. Stay tuned for more updates!
