Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform brings 4G VoLTE support to Feature phones

Qualcomm has announced a new mobile chip that will go inside entry-level phones. It is called Qualcomm 205 and one of the most important features here is that it will bring 4G connectivity to these entry-level smartphones and feature phones. Yes, you read that right, we are talking about feature phones as well here. This certainly looks like a move to enable each and every user regardless of the phone they are using, to be able to connect to the internet at a faster speed.

Qualcomm has a lot to say about this new chip that they have launched but not all of them are necessarily good things. One of the first things to note here is the fact that this new 205 SoC comes with a Category 4 LTE modem. Now, what does that mean is, it will allow for peak download speeds of up 150 Mbps and upload speeds at 50 Mbps & also Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Do make a note that these speeds may not look groundbreaking but do make a note that we are talking about entry-level smartphones and feature phones here. The pricing will be significantly lower and for that kind of price, these speeds are decent enough.

The SoC also comes with a support for dual SIMs too and there is also Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, ANT+, FM Radio, etc. Another important thing to note is the fact that these new chips are pin compatible with Qualcomm’s existing entry-level chips like the Snapdragon 210 and the 212. This will allow manufacturers to conveniently make use of the new chips with the existing design and technology, which is always a good thing.

According to Qualcomm, the new 205 uses a dual-core 1.1GHz CPU along with an Adreno GPU. However, since it will be dealing with entry-level smartphones and feature phones, it will cap the display support at 480p and even the camera support at 3 megapixels. However, on the positive side, the company is promising an exceptional battery-life with upto 45 days of standby time, 20 hours of talk time and over 86 hours of music playback. Qualcomm also says that the processor supports a “Linux-based OS” and hence it is expected a toned down version of our beloved Android OS should work just fine.

This is indeed a great move from Qualcomm since they are trying their best to enable feature phone users also to take advantage of high speeds internet.According to some reports, feature phones have always remained in high demand in many emerging countries like India, Vietnam, etc. Hence, users in these regions will greatly benefit from this new SoC on the table.
