Earlier this month, the Chinese smartphone company, Huawei has launched the affordable smartphone in the premium Mate series called as Mate 9 Lite. It is the same device that was launched as Honor 6X in its home country in October. Now again, the same device is launched with a new name “Huawei GR5 2017” in few Asian countries. It is the successor to Huawei GR5 smartphone that was launched in January this year. The Huawei GR5 2017 is already launched in Sri Lanka and is soon expected to land in few Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam and Indonesia. The device is now available for pre-order in Sri Lanka for LKR 35,900 (approx INR 16,500). In China, the Honor 6X with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage is priced at 999 Yuan (approx INR 10,000) which is 60% lower than what it costs in Sri Lanka.
Talking about the build quality, it sports an Aluminum built all metal body with rounded corners. The power button and the volume rocker can be found on the right edge of the device. The camera module on the rear is slightly protruding out, and on the front, there is a 2.5D laid on top. Coming to the specifications, there is a 5.5-inch IPS display with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution. Under the hood is the in-house Kirin 655 octa-core processor clocked at 2.1GHz and coupled with Mali T830 GPU. As said earlier, it comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There is also a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion additionally upto 128GB. The GR5 2017 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow based EMUI 4.1 laid on top.
On the other hand, the high-end Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro smartphone are launched with the latest EMUI 5.0 based on Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. In the camera department, there is a dual rear camera setup with dual tone LED flash. While the website mentions the device to feature 12MP dual rear cameras, it actually comes with a 12MP + 2MP camera sensors on the back. With lower resolution sensors, we can’t expect the same dual camera experience as on the Mate 9 or the Huawei P9 smartphones. For selfies, the GR5 2017 offers an 8MP front-facing camera with wide-angle lens. With all these power hungry specifications, the GR5 2017 is kept powered on by a 3,340mAh non-removable battery that is rated to deliver 23 hours of talk time and lasts upto 650 hours of standby.
It supports dual SIM dual standby and offers 4G LTE connectivity for faster internet speeds. The GR5 2017 also sports a circular fingerprint sensor placed on the rear of the device. Apart from unlocking the device, it can also be used for accessing notification panel, capturing images in camera mode, and few other functions. The device measures 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2 mm and weighs 162 grams. Connectivity options include 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 GPS, and Micro USB 2.0 port. As of now, there is no exact date for shipping the device. It will be available in Gray, Gold, and Silver color options. In India, we can expect the device to be launched as Honor 6X instead of Mate 9 Lite or GR5 2017 since the company is already selling Honor 5X.
