With more and more old school classics like Pokemon and Super Mario making a come back in the form of new iteration for smartphones, people are trying to find out ways to jump back into the old school gaming. And talking about old school classic gaming, we cannot help, but talk about some of the Nintendo classics. Also, there is a new gadget in town which can essentially help you relive all the classics and all you need along with that is a smartphone.
Yes, meet Hyperkin’s Smartboy, a $50 gadget which turns any smartphone, with a USB Type – C connector to a classic Nintendo Game boy. This product was pushed into the market as an April fools prank, however, it was too good to be just a prank and now we the working going on sale in the markets very soon. Yes, this is an actual product and it will help you play Nintendo game boy cartridges on your smartphone.
Talking about the design, the case essentially takes up half of your smartphone’s body. Hence, this pretty much leaves only a half of the display for gameplay. On the front, there is a familiar layout as Nintendo’s handheld. There are two face button, a D-pad and start and select toggles. The back is where the cartridge goes in and it is coupled with a left and right shoulder keys. Right below the cartridge slot, there is a toggle, which essentially lets you adjust the width of the case. This will let even wider smartphones to fit in, without any issues.
Once you have the case, all you have to do is, drop the smartphone inside the case and throw in the cartridge and you should be good to go. However, this gadget sounds too good to be true right? Well, not really. The execution is a little bit complicated. There are two essential apps which you need to download i.e. SmartBoy Serial app and MyOldBoy. And on top of that, you will also need a pre-existing Gameboy emulator. Yes, this case works with an emulator.
Also, the game can’t be loaded directly from the cartridges. It essentially loads the game into your smartphones’ memory, which takes some time. And once it is done, you have to open the game by going to the directory from the file manager. Well, yes, it is as complicated it sounds. But don’t worry, the MyOldBoy remembers the directory and hence you don’t have to browse every single time. Once you setup everything, you can dive into your favorite classic title and show off what this gadget can do. Having said that, be sure to let us know what do you think about it.
