YU to release Marshmallow based Yu Open OS for Yunique, Yureka Plus & Yuphoria
Earlier this month, YU Televentures confirmed that their exclusive licensing deal with Cyanogen Inc had ended. With Lenovo launching Zuk 1, the air has been cleared on that part. As for the Yu’s plans to move forward are clear now as the CEO Rahul Sharma has released a statement on their official forum page. In a post addressing to the developer community, Mr. Sharma is looking to create a separate OS that is more interesting than former interfaces.
It is not the first time that company hinted us that they would be parting with Cyanogen OS, as in September last year company showcased their most affordable handset Yunique with almost stock Android Lollipop 5.1 OS. Recently brand also rolled out the Project Highway, which is what Rahul Sharma has announced on its forum post. It’s an open source code supply chain management system for Yu devices.
Currently, the company has released Marshmallow based Open-Source code of the OS for three Yu devices, which includes Yunique, Yureka/ Yureka Plus, and Yuphoria Smartphones. While the statement says that its available on these three devices and can be downloaded from the dedicated developer website, we saw active download page for only Yureka and Yuphoria.
The brand is calling it YU open OS, which can also be abbreviated as Yu OS. So, yeah, in short the young promising brand has released their separate OS. Under this Project Highway company will be curating source codes from multiple points, which include Google AOSP repos, Chipset Vendors repos, Various ROMs and Internal Yu customization. This will allow the company to create one manifest that will support all YU devices as well as other Android devices.
Do you understand the last line of above statement? Well, it means the company is not only going to offer this OS to Yu devices but might be planning to provide this to other handsets as well. Just like MIUI, Xiaomi’s forked version of Android is available for other Android handset to flash. So, it’s possible that YU Televentures might be taking a software path after all because that’s where the real business lies. We will all know soon. Note that the stable build for these devices would be out in the next 30 days, as promised by the founder.
