Bluetooth 5 offers 2x Speeds, 4x Range & Location-relevant Info & Navigation

Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has officially announced the new Bluetooth 5 technology. This new technology is said to provide significant improvements over the currently available Bluetooth 4.2. It will be available by the end of this year or early 2017 while the devices equipped with Bluetooth 5 will be only launched in the 1H 2017. With the latest Bluetooth 5, there will be no lags in transferring files or receiving notifications. It is said to be twice as speed as the Bluetooth 4.2 and almost four times longer range, all these with low power consumption.

Speaking on the occasion, Mark Powell, Executive Director of the Bluetooth SIG, said,

“Bluetooth 5 will transform the way people experience the IoT by making it something that happens simply and seamlessly around them. Increasing operation range will enable connections to IoT devices that extend far beyond the walls of a typical home, while increasing speed supports faster data transfers and software updates for devices. And now with the ability to broadcast a much richer set of information, Bluetooth 5 will make beacons, location awareness, and other connectionless services an even more relevant part of an effortless and seamless IoT experience”.

With the larger expectation in the growth of IoT in future, the Bluetooth 5 will be transferring 800% more data than earlier. The improved optimizations make this new technology better suited for the connectionless services like navigation and others. While few connections with the current generation Bluetooth requires additional apps, but with the Bluetooth 5, there will be no need of apps for connecting. As of now, Bluetooth technology is used in over 8.2 billion devices and by 2020, it expected to be on one-third of total IoT devices.

The usage of Bluetooth beacons will also be increased with the new Bluetooth 5. These beacons can be placed in the surroundings of the main hubs for and accurate data. The currently available wearables come with smaller battery capacities and need to be connected all the time with the smartphone through Bluetooth for getting notifications and calls. With the Bluetooth 5, all these tasks can be done without any lag and that too by consuming less battery life. Not the all the available devices in the market come with Bluetooth 4.2, but we can expect many manufacturers to choose Bluetooth 5 once it is made available.
