Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon 835 SoC Built on Samsung’s 10nm FinFET Process

While everyone expecting Qualcomm to announce Snapdragon 830 SoC, the compnay indeed annonced the Snapdragon 835 SoC as the successor to their current flaghsip lineup. A few months back, Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 821 SoC as an upgrade to the Snapdragon 820 SoC. Now the new Snapdragon 835 SoC will be manufactured in collaboration with Samsung. Qualcomm will be using Samsung’s 10nm FinFET process. Just last month, Samsung has officially annoucned about its 10nm manufacturing technology in South Korea. For comparison the new SoC will be more power efficient than the Snapdragon 820 SoC which uses 14nm architecture.

Commenting on the announcement, Keith Kressin, Senior VP, Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, said,

“We are excited to continue working together with Samsung in developing products that lead the mobile industry. Using the new 10nm process node is expected to allow our premium tier Snapdragon 835 processor to deliver greater power efficiency and increase performance while also allowing us to add a number of new capabilities that can improve the user experience of tomorrow’s mobile devices.”

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 835 SoC will be 30% smaller in size, 40% power efficient, and offers 27% higher performance than the Snapdragon 820 SoC. With the smaller size of the processor, now manufacturers will get more space to manage instead of adding protruding cameras or removing the 3.5mm audio port. Not much information is revelaed about the processor. But as we mentioned in the earlier article, the Snapdragon 835 SoC will be first processor to use the latest Quick Charge 4 fast charging technology. Apart from the power efficient processor, the Quick Charge 4 also gives better battery life.

With just 5 minutes of charging, the device is said to give 5 hours of usage. Though there are few fast charging technologies like OnePlus’s Dash Charge and OPPO’s VOOC Flash Charge which take lesser charging time than the currently available Quick Charge 3.0 technology, with the the upcoming Quick Charge 4, we can see a drastic increase in the battery life of at least premium smartphones. Earlier there are few rumors that the new Snapdragon processor to come clocked at 3.0GHz. As of now, there are no other details about the chipset. We will be updating once there is any new information available.

Recently, Huawei and MediaTek annouced Kirin 960 and Helio X30  processors as the successors to the Kirin 950 and Helio X20 processors resectively. While the recently launched Huawei Mate 9 came with Kirin 960 SoC, MediaTek announced that Helio X30 powered device will be available in the first half of 2017. Even the smartphones using the new Snapdragon 835 SoC will be avaialable in early 2017.
